  38.       The most basic, and most commonly used, operation with the
  39.       dialog is simply to click on one of the gradients in the
  40.       scrollable list, in order to make it GIMP's current gradient,
  41.       which will then be used by any operation that involves a
  42.       gradient.

  45.       If you <span class="emphasis"><em>double-click</em></span> on a gradient, you will
  46.       be able to edit its name.  Note, however, that you are only
  47.       allowed to change the names of gradients that you have created
  48.       yourself, not the ones that come pre-installed with GIMP.  If
  49.       you try to rename a pre-installed gradient, you will be able to
  50.       edit the name, but as soon as you hit return or click somewhere
  51.       else, the name will revert to its original value.  It is a
  52.       general rule that you cannot alter the resources that GIMP
  53.       pre-installs for you: brushes, patterns, gradients, etc; only
  54.       ones that you create yourself.

  57.       The buttons at the bottom of the dialog allow you to operate on
  58.       gradients in several ways:

  77.             This creates a new gradient, initialized as a simple
  78.             grayscale, and activates the Gradient Editor so that you
  79.             can alter it.  Gradients that you create are automatically
  80.             saved in the <tt class="filename">gradients</tt> folder of your
  81.             personal GIMP directory, from which they are automatically
  82.             loaded when GIMP starts.  (You can change this folder, or
  83.             add new ones, using the Preferences dialog.)
